
Calling all students in grades 5-12! Enter our American History Essay Contest or our Christopher Columbus Essay Contest for the 2011-2012 school year.
GRADES 5-8 TOPIC The topic for the 2011-2012 American History Essay Contest: “Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812.”
Pretend you were alive during the War of 1812 and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that exciting but dangerous time. Describe the person and how he or she stood up for America. Explain why it is important to honor such heroes when we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812.
GRADES 9-12 The topic for the 2011-2012 NSDAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest: Christopher Columbus: In his own time, in history, and today.
Describe Christopher Columbus as he was understood in three different time periods: What did 15th century people think about his accomplishments? How did 19th-century historians view him? How did Columbus, who had primitive ships and no computers or modern navigation equipment, affect our lives today?

Also, the NSDAR offers Junior American Citizenship contests. These contests are for grades K-12 in public schools, private schools, or home programs. It contains themed contests in the areas of poetry, photo essay, poster, banner, and community service projects. Check back in July for the contest theme.
